Many twenty somethings seem to think that having this traditional 9-5 job is the worst thing that can happen to you. I used to be one of those girls. Honestly, I thought that I could never be happy if I settled down to a 9-5 job. Well, I’ve proved myself wrong after working in several 9-5 jobs that weren’t that horrible. Now I think 9-5 jobs actually don’t earn their notorious reputation. There are so many good things in this kind of steady jobs. My biggest dream still is to become an entrepreneur and to run my own business. But nowadays I think every young professional should gain some experience before starting their own business. Of course, not everyone’s path will look the same and everyone does what is best for her situation.
I think that in general twenty somethings are afraid to get stuck in this life and job you hate. I’m afraid of that too and I don’t think you should stay in a job you absolutely loathe. But having a 9-5 job you actually like is not the end of the world but a great chance to career growth and learning. Of course, you might not be your own boss or have the power to make major decisions without your boss’ permission, but anyway, it’s a great way to learn how to work with others. So, if you get a job offer and you’re hesitating, I definitely tell you to take a chance. Just give it a try and it may surprise you.
Major benefits of 9-5 jobs
Steady income gives you more freedom
I’ve worked as a freelancer and as much as I love being my own boss, working in a gig industry can be full of stress as well. It’s hard to make long-term plans when you never know how much money you are going to have next month. You can’t really take mortgage or do any big investments for your future because you need to save all that money you got just to make sure you have money to pay rent even when business is slow.
So I’d say the best part of 9-5 jobs is the financial freedom they give you. Of course, saving is still a good idea since you can’t be sure about anything these days, but you still know exactly how much money you’ll get next month so you can make long-term plans as well. And that’s what I call freedom.
You have a chance to learn from others
One huge benefit in 9-5 jobs is that you usually work with bunch of other people. That means you have a great chance to learn from your coworkers. The worst part of being a freelancer or self-employed is that you don’t have much other people around you. Of course you have your clients, but you don’t have anyone you could learn from or ask for advice. So make the most of the people around you. Network with them, have some informational interviews and ask for advice. I encourage you to learn something from all of your coworkers. It can definitely help you to learn valuable skills that will help you to make the next big career move.
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is easier
Last week I wrote a blog post about maintaining an ideal work-life balance. I think it’s very important and it’s much easier in your 9-5 job than as a freelancer or as an entrepreneur. When you’re working 9-5 it’s easy to know when you’re working and when you have some free time. You spend the days at the office but you have evenings and weekends just for yourself, at least mostly for yourself. When you’re working as a freelancer it’s actually very hard to take a break from work. So you can consider yourself lucky if you have a 9-5 job.
You can focus on doing your job
Absolutely the best part of 9-5 jobs is the fact that you can simply focus on doing your job as well as possible. You don’t need to worry about running that business, developing new strategies for the future (unless that’s your job) or worrying about the finances of the company. You can just do your part. Of course, I think you should develop your skill all the time but still you have the peace to focus on your own thing and not to worry about the business in general.
Even though I really love my current position and job, I haven’t given up my dream to become an entrepreneur one day. If you feel like you’re stuck in your 9-5 job I’d really like to remind you that this is just temporary. What you do now doesn’t define your whole future. We reach our dreams step by step and this is just one step towards your dreams. So work your ass off, make the most of your 9-5 and then take the next step when you’re ready. But in the meantime I want you to see all the good things you have in your life right now. And trust me, 9-5 job isn’t that bad at all.
