Many people spend years trying to figure out their purpose or their dream job. I used to be one of those people and trust me, I am so happy to announce that I’m not one of them anymore. That’s not because I have found my purpose or my dream job. Nope. I am not one of those people simply because I stopped looking for those things. I even stopped believing in those things. Yep, now I said it. I don’t believe that i have this one big purpose I should find out and conquer. And I definitely don’t believe in the existence of dream jobs. Nope. And guess what? I don’t feel miserable or hopeless even though I realized I can never find that one job that would fulfill all my dreams and hopes. I actually feel damn good. Let me explain why.
When I was trying to figure out what I want to do with my life I felt desperate. I have never dreamed about having a family which means I’ve always put a huge pressure on my career growth. I want to have a career that really fulfills my dreams. I still do want a career but I’m much more realistic nowadays. But I was looking for something perfect before. Something that would give my whole life a new meaning. Something that would change my entire life into something fabulous. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds pretty unrealistic? Well, it was. Every time I thought I finally found it, something went wrong. Maybe I got bored or ran out of interest. And I thought that this would never happen in my dream job. And then I moved on to the next thing. I wish I’d known better.
Thank god I finally got so desperate that I started to question the whole thing. I finally understood that it is simply not possible that I was put on this earth only for one thing. And if it was like that, why the heck was it so hard to find that thing? Well, the answer is that one thing or one purpose can never give us everything we need. We are much more complex than that. I am much more complex than that and I was put on this planet to do so many things. And that’s simply wonderful.
Okay, now you know that there is no such thing as a dream job or a purpose. Maybe this fact took a huge pressure away from your shoulders, if it did, that’s great! But I bet there’s someone there reading this article who feels empty right now. Someone whose head is full of new questions like. “Really, what am I supposed to do now?” You may even feel disappointed to know that you’ll never find that one perfect job that will make everything perfect. You’re not alone, darling. Here are some tips that hopefully help you to get back on track.
No dream job? What am I supposed to do now?!
Find your dream attitude
You won’t find a dream job but you can probably find your own dream attitude. Having a positive attitude helps you to live a happy life. When you constantly keep looking for the silver lining you will see the beauty of everything. Your current job is a great place to start. There must be some good things about your position, so focus on them. Write a list of all the benefits of your current job. You will definitely find some (at least getting your regular paycheck!). This helps you to see that things aren’t really that bad right now.
Having a dream attitude doesn’t mean you should ignore the bad things. That’s why I want you to write a list of the negative sides of your current job as well. When you’ve done with it, try to figure out a solution for all those things you find boring/hard/unpleasant. You’ll be surprised how much you actually can affect to those things if you simply put some effort to it.
I also want you to understand that a big part of feeling motivated and fulfilled at work comes from self-development. When you learn new things and really master your job, it helps you to feel more enthusiastic and motivated. Quite often we think that motivation is something that just comes from nowhere but it isn’t really like that. We must work hard and earn that motivation. So don’t give up if you don’t immediately feel motivated.
Accept that not all days are good days
We tend to have this unrealistic goal that when we have finally found our purpose or our dream job, all days will be all sunshine. That’s not true. I really enjoy my current job, but I still have days when I’d rather stay in bed doing nothing. Life is like that, humans are like that. We all have good and bad days. Having a job you enjoy can help you to have more good days, but there will still be bad days. There’s nothing you can do about that except to find your dream attitude and work hard despite of the fact that some days suck. There’s no purpose or a dream job that would rescue you from feeling down every now and then.
Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket
This one is very important too. Having a great job won’t make your life perfect. You need more than just this one thing in your life. Your job can’t replace relationships, relaxation, exercising, self-care and adventures. Life is more than just work and it’s unfair to wait your work to fulfill all your dreams. That’s why you should really work for your relationships and free time as well. Set goals, try new things and get a hobby or two. That way you can understand how complex this life actually is. If you keep working and ignore all these other aspects, you are simply wasting your life.
So what do you think? Do you believe in dream jobs?
