I have read a lot about personal branding and even though I actually love the whole concept and think it as a necessary part of today’s career growth strategy, I still do know that it’s not all sweet and fun. Personal branding can actually be a threat to your well-being. I don’t want to scare you but personal branding may hurt your career, your personal life and your mental health. Of course, you can avoid it. You just need to be aware of the consequences that may follow your personal branding process if you’re not careful. So, is personal branding a threat to your well-being? It may be.
Before I get to those negative sides of personal branding, I want to highlight the fact that I am actually very pro personal branding type of girl. I think you should do it. But you shouldn’t do it without thinking first. You need to be sure that your personal brand is actually what you need it to be. If it’s not, it may harm your career and your whole life. Here are the two biggest mistakes you can do with your personal brand that may even be a threat to your well-being.
Not knowing your own goals
If you haven’t yet figured out what you want to achieve with your personal brand, there’s really no point to brand yourself. Your personal brand exists to help you to grow your career and to accomplish your goals. So if you haven’t yet figured out your own big vision you shouldn’t necessarily try to brand yourself.
The reason here is that if you start to build your personal brand now and discover your big passions later, your personal brand may not be well-aligned with your new goals. And re-branding can be hard and it takes a lot of time. So try to figure out your plans before you spend more time building your brand. There’s also a chance that you brand yourself in a way that will be harmful later if you end up turning your career upside down. Of course, this is the risk one must always take.
If you’re not sure what you want to be known for, it’s always safe to build your personal brand based on your current job. You can read more about different approaches to personal branding on this post.
Not staying true to your values
You’ve probably heard that you should stay authentic no matter what. This is true. You need to build a personal brand that is well-aligned with your own core values. If you try to ignore your own values or live against them, it definitely is a threat to your well-being. So, I suggest you figure out your core values before building your personal brand. And I also suggest that you make sure you are not trying to build a brand that isn’t a good fit to your values.
Of course, you should also remember that you are not your personal brand. You are much more than that. This means you don’t have to include all your values, goals or personality into your personal brand. You can and you should keep some things just for yourself. The most important thing is that you don’t try to be anything you’re not or anything that is against your own values.
So what do you think? Have you ever thought about the cons of personal branding? Have you figured out some?
