Hobbies aren’t just for high school kids, actually I think hobbies are even more important when you’re an adult. They give you a lot of new experiences but also provide balance between your work and your personal life. Having a hobby is a great way to find new friends outside your work, learn some new skills, relax after a long day at work and have some fun. So, yes adults need hobbies too!
While I was studying in university I didn’t have much time or money to have any extra hobbies, but since I joined the workforce my situation has changed so much that I finally could come back to my old hobbies and start some new ones as well. When I was in high school I had a lot of hobbies. I was riding twice a week and also I danced hip hop, jazz and reggae for 4 hours a week. I could say that I was pretty active back then.
Somehow we seem to think that as an adult you shouldn’t have that many activities outside work. I totally disagree. Yes, it’s true that as an adult you’re incredible busy, but weren’t you actually busy in high school as well? At least I spent 8 hours a day at school, then I headed home to do my homework and then there were friends, hobbies etc. Usually I left home at 7.30 am and came back around 9 pm. Seems quite overwhelming, right? But it actually wasn’t. I was having a time of my life. And that’s why I’ve decided to start a new hobby this fall.
Why you need hobbies as an adult too?
Work-life balance is a huge theme on my blog this August and I seriously can’t write about hobbies without talking about balance. I believe that having a hobby is a key element of creating and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. You need to pick a hobby that brings you joy and helps you to forget your work. When we talk about hobbies, it’s very important to remember that your hobby shouldn’t be about improving yourself. Your hobby isn’t about growing your career. It’s about having fun.
I know that you’re tired when you finally get back home after a long day at work. But I promise you that binge watching Netflix won’t help. Doing something active, fun and relaxing is much better strategy when you need to cope with stress and fatigue.
Back in high school I was dreaming about becoming an olympic winner in dressage. Of course, I pretty much knew that I wasn’t training hard enough to ever achieve that dream but still it was something I thought about once in a while. I think that when we think about starting a hobby as adults, many people ask themselves the question “what’s the point?”. It’s probably too late for us to ever made it into olympics. In our society it seems like it’s not acceptable to do things without setting some serious goals. It’s like if you can’t achieve anything big by doing something, it’s not worth doing at all. i’m guilty of this kind of thinking as well and it’s sad.
Understanding that I can do something just for fun has been a game-changer for me. I always thought that I shouldn’t spend time painting, dancing, riding or playing piano, because those were things I’ll never be good enough. Truth is that I will never become a professional painter, pianist, rider or dancer. But another truth is that I really enjoy doing all those things. And that’s a good reason to spend time doing those things.
5 Hobbies you can start this fall
Fall is a great season for new hobbies since many hobbies and courses are starting in September. That means it’s very easy to join a new group or a class. If you want to find the job opportunities in your city, check out the local newspaper or the Facebook group of your local community. Of course, Google is your friend here and as a millenial the easiest way to find a new hobby is to search for *hobby* *your location*, hahahah.
Anyway, if you don’t know what kind of hobby you should start, here are some ideas you can start with. All of these hobbies are pretty easy to start with no experience.
Yoga is very fashionable and it actually helps you to calm yourself down after a long and stressful day at work. It improves your strength and flexibility and there are many different kind of yoga types you can try. If you’re into meditation and spiritual stuff you should try kundalini yoga. Or if you prefer physical training you should try astanga yoga. If you’re not familiar with the yoga thing just yet, the best place to start is hatha yoga class. Or if you’re into something more extreme, try aerial yoga. That’s actually on my personal bucket list!
If you’ve always dreamed about doing something creative, painting is a hobby for you. You don’t need to be a talented painter to attend your local painting class. Have some fun, play with colors and don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to have a blast!
There are a lot of different ways to dance and I bet you’re going to find at least one dancing class you’re going to love. Try salsa, reggaeton, ballet or jazz. or if you want to take your partner with you, that’s also possible! Dancing is fun and it also improves your physical strength, your flexibility and it’s a great way to keep yourself fit even if you were spending most of your days sitting behind your desk. If you want to try something exciting, try pole dancing. It’s pretty hard at first but it’s also a lot of fun.
4. Creative writing
If you like writing why wouldn’t you make a hobby out of it? I bet there are a lot of writing groups in your city as well. There are usually different groups for people who want to write non-fiction, fiction, poems, novels, short stories etc. Just pick the one that resonates with you.
Swimming is one of my favorite sports and that’s why I try to head to the local pool at least couple of times a week. It is one of those sports that you can do with your friends but also alone. It’s easy enough for everyone to start but it also provides challenges and different techniques for more advanced swimmers as well. It’s also a great way to move your body when you have some troubles with your back or knees.
When you’re trying to find a new hobby, consider starting your high school hobby again. There are basketball or volleyball clubs for adults as well or you can start singing lessons again as well. Just make sure you pick a hobby you love and that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed after a long day at work.
